HYBRID BUYING GUIDE
First analyze your game. Take the time to look at your game and
see where a hybrid fits into it and can help you improve. Here are 5 common conditions that you
may encounter that will get you started.
1.
That first shot off the tee: With
a lower center of gravity hybrids are known for their higher ball flight and
therefore will come down at a steeper angle enabling the ball to stop on the
green. This is ideal for long par
3’s or short par 4’s where you have to carry a bunker or water.
2.
Great first shot now you are in the fairway: On
long par 4’s and par 5’s hybrids will make it easier and give you confidence
with the distance control and accuracy. Now you can go for it and reach more of those greens.
3.
Missed the fairway and in the rough: The
design of the hybrid gives you the confidence of swinging through the rough with
a square face, unlike the irons that get caught up in the high grass and either
twist or dig into the turf.
4.
You had a great shot, but landed in the fairway
bunker: The bigger club head and larger size of the hybrid enables
you to swing through the sand and get the ball into the air and out. Remember to put the ball farther back
in your stance to insure a steeper angle at impact.
5.
Just missed the green: The
design of the hybrid and its shorter shaft give you the ability to get the ball
rolling like a putt. Many of the
pros are getting into this.
Take a look at you game and
determine where the hybrid can assist you in becoming a better golfer.
Now choose your
clubs:
Take the time to try several
manufactures clubs. Many pro shops
and sporting good stores let you take clubs out and try them. Try them.
There are two types of
hybrids - woods and irons. The woods look a bit like smaller fairway woods,
with a smaller club head, lower profile and shorter shaft. In contrast the
irons look like traditional irons but they are thicker and larger.
If you are on a budget take
the worst bag in you club (not your putter) and replace it with a hybrid. Once you get the idea you will return
to buy another. They all work and
there is a big difference in price. Match your existing clubs, try something new, and get the one that looks
good. Golf is a game of confidence
and feeling good about the club you purchase is important.
Make sure you match the shaft
and stiffness of your current clubs.
